Iä! Shub-Niggurath! Recentemente ouvi a versão da banda The Sins of Thy Beloved (Gothic/Death Metal) do clássico do Metallica "The Thing That Should Not Be". Foi o suficiente pra acordar meu interesse por Lovecraft. Há algum tempo atrás, havia lido todos os textos disponíveis online em duas semanas, nas férias. Revisitando a Lovecraft Library percebi que haviam sido colocados online os textos escritos em colaboração com outros autores, os quais estou lendo atualmente. Por isso não dormi esta noite.

Várias coisas fazem de Lovecraft um grande escritor de horror. A mais valorizada é a capacidade de criar a partir de citações vagas uma mitologia de coesão incrível. Adicionando ainda mais credibilidade, ele não se importava quando seus mitos eram citados em outras histórias, e incluía em suas próprias histórias os mitos de outros escritores. Assim, criou-se o Cthulhu Mythos, uma mitologia que apesar de declaradamente fictícia, inspirou seguidores legítimos, e influenciou seitas como o Satanismo e a Magia Negra, que incluem alguns de seus elementos. De seu livro assumidamente fictício, o Necronomicon, foram lançadas várias falsificações.

Além disso, a interação gradual destes mitos com os protagonistas, que invariavelmente enlouquecem pelo conhecimento que não deveriam ter, criam um clima de medo fantástico. Contribui ainda para este clima o estilo do autor, com frases longas, com vários adjetivos e advérbios, muitos destes arcaicos. Finalmente, a ambientação na Nova Inglaterra (criando as cidades de Arkham (sim, o asilo de Gotham City, e a própria Gotham City foram inspiradas aqui), com a Miskatonic University, Innsmouth, Dunwich e Kingsport por exemplo), e a interação com lugarejos decadentes, aldeões taciturnos e cultistas enlouquecidos completam o cenário.

Finalmente, o uso comum de descobertas científicas recentes à época (como a teoria da relatividade e o planeta Plutão/Yuggoth), contrastando com sua mente aberta ao extremo, que considerava o conhecimento humano ínfimo comparado aos mistérios do universo. Destaque para conceitos utilizados em suas histórias e somente após a sua morte incluídos na ciência "séria", como a noção de universos paralelos (Through the Gates of the Silver Key), a noção da observação/medição como elemento de alteração do sistema (The Haunter of the Dark), e a citação em 1929-30 do lanternas movidas a energia atômica (The Mound).

We see things only as we are constructed to see them, and can gain no idea of their absolute nature.
